A clinical analysis with follow up result on 236 cases of breast cancer operated at the Busan Gospel Hospital during the 13?year period 1970 to 1982 was performed. The result were as follows.
1) According to TNM system, the most common stage was stage ¥± (54.7%) then stage ¥² (38.1%), stage ¥°(11.0%) and stage ¥³(o.4%) followed in order of frequency.
2) The most common pathological type was infilterating adenocarcinoma(80.9%)
3) Radical mastectomy was performed in 104 cases(44.1%), modified radical mastectomy in 123 cases(52.1%), simple mastectomy in 6 cases(2.5%) and lumpectomy in one case. Adjuvant treatment was performed in 100 cases(42.4%).
4) Follow up study was possible in 226 cases(95.8%). In all cases 5 year survival rate was 43.5%(37/85). 5 year survival rate in stage I was 80%(4/5) and in stage 11 59.4%(22/37), over all 10 year survival rate was 30.4(7/23).
5) In the cases, treated during the period 1979 to 1982. One year survival rate was 96.5% (136/141), 2 year survival rate 86.5%(83/97), 3 year survival rate 83.6%(51/61) and 4 year survival rate 78.9%(15/l9).
6) In radical mastectomy, over all 5 year survival rate was 45.2%. Five year survival rate in stage ¥° was loo%(2/2), 62.5%(10/16) in stage ¥± and 7.7%(l/13) in stage ¥². In the modified radical mastectomy group, over all 5 year survival rate was 41. 6%(20/48), 66.7%(2/3)in stage ¥°, 57.9%(11/19) in stage ¥± and 26.9%(7/26) in stage ¥².
7) The axillary lymph node metastasis was positive in 70.9% (163/230). Five year survival rate was 84.2%(l6/19) in the cases without lymph node metastasis. 25%(3/12) in the cases with 1 to 3 positive lymph nodes and 16.7%(4/24) in 4 more dositive lymph nodes.
